Smoothie Bowl 101

Posted: Feb 22 2016

It’s still early enough in the year to grasp on to those well-meaning New Years resolutions you made after a few too many bubblies and a few too many Christmas extravagances.

Healthy shouldn’t be boring or tasteless (or else how would anyone expect we ever stick to it) and that’s why smoothie bowls are the greatest thing to happen to breakfast since, well, sliced bread.

Surely you’ve seen them devoured at every trendy health mecca around town, or perhaps you’ve savoured one yourself. It’s time to take smoothie bowls into your own hands and get making them at home. They’re much easier than they look, I promise.

Here are 3 easy recipes to get you started. Not only do they taste heavenly and keep you satisfied for hours, but they’re also full of amazing health benefits. There’s so many types of smoothie bowls you could make but eventually you start to realise a lot contain some pretty consistent ingredients. To name a few:

  • Chia seeds: Rich in fiber, omega-3 fats, protein, vitamins and minerals.

  • Açaí berries: Contains antioxidants, fiber and heart-healthy fats.

  • Cacao: High in resveratrol, a potent antioxidant, known for its ability to cross your blood-brain barrier to help protect your nervous system.

  • Bananas: A very good source of vitamin B6 and a good source of manganese, vitamin C, potassium, dietary fiber, potassium.

So what are you waiting for! Pull out the blender. Throw in the ingredients and become a smoothie-sipping-kaftan-wearing-goddess, glowing from all of the goodness you’re eating!

Banana, Fig, and Chia Detox Smoothie Bowl

1 Frozen Banana
1/4 cup Almond Milk
1 Scoop Vegan Protein Powder [I use this vanilla vegan blend]
2 Tbs Agave Nectar

2-3 Figs
1/2 Banana
1 Tbs Chia seeds
Walnuts & Pepitas
Agave Nectar

1. Blend your frozen banana, almond milk, protein powder, and agave nectar in a blender. Pour into a bowl.
2. Slice the figs and banana, and chop the walnuts and pepitas.

Coconut Cacao Smoothie Bowl

200ml coconut milk
1.5 frozen bananas
Handful of almonds
1 serve Amazonia Raw cacao and coconut protein isolate
1 tsp maca powder
1 tbsp chia seeds

Combine ingredients in blender. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Sprinkle with your favourite toppings such as shredded coconut and granola.

Summer Acai Bowl with Big Cluster Toasted Buckwheat Granola.

2 frozen Acai Berry Packs OR 4 tablespoons Acai Berry Powder*
1 cup coconut milk (or your favorite milk)
1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries (I used blueberries)
1/2 cup fresh or frozen pitted cherries
1/4 cup fresh or frozen pineapple chunks
1/4 cup fresh or frozen mango chunks
2 soft medjool dates, pitted
sliced mango, granola, hemp seeds, cacao nibs, berries, edible flowers and cashew butter, for topping

Run the frozen acai berry packs under hot water and then squeeze them out into a blender. To the blender, add the coconut milk, berries, cherries, pineapple, mango and dates. Blend until completely smooth. Pour the smoothie into a bowl or in my case, a cracked coconut. Top with your desired toppings. I went with buckwheat granola (recipe below), sliced mango, berries, hemp seeds, cacao nibs, a drizzle of vanilla cashew butter and a cherry.

Happy Blending,
